What Is Foam Stabilizer?

Aug 14, 2020

Foam stabilizer: a substance that can stabilize the formed foam. Foaming agents and foam stabilizers are sometimes consistent and sometimes inconsistent.

For example, soap and washing powder have good foam stability, so they are both foaming agents and foam stabilizers.

Foam stabilizers are foam stabilizers, a class of substances that extend the life of the foam and improve the stability of the surfactant foam.

General rule: High molecular weight and low molecular weight are better for foam stability, and the network structure compound is better than the chain compound foam stability

Foam stabilizer mechanism

Foam is a thermodynamically unstable system. It has a higher free energy than the sum of the free energy of air and liquid, so the foam will spontaneously burst.

Foam stability: refers to the length of the "life" of the foam. It refers to the ability of the foam to maintain the liquid contained in it and maintain its own existence.

Generally, when the surface tension of the liquid is low and the strength of the film is high, whether it is stable foam or unstable foam, the foaming power is better.

The state of the bubble

The liquid that constitutes the wall of the foam membrane actually flows, evaporates, and shrinks continuously, so all foams are in an unbalanced state.

Elements for maintaining foam stability

1) Surfactant

Because its molecular membrane can hinder the flow of liquid on the foam membrane, the drainage process is difficult to occur, thereby increasing foam stability.

2) When protein, gum arabic, carboxymethyl cellulose, etc. are added to the solution of the polymer protective colloid, the foam film will have a larger viscosity, and the drainage process can also be prevented. Generally, the greater the viscosity of the liquid, the longer the foam life.

Foam stabilization principle of liquid viscosity:

One: Increase the strength of the foam liquid film;

Second: As the surface viscosity becomes larger, the membrane liquid is not easy to flow out.
